I've posted a fairly long essay to the Blog site, entitled "Thoughts About Layout Design."

You can find it here:

This is the first of two parts.  It was prompted in part by past discussions here.  It took a while to write and went through several revisions -- yet I'm quite aware that many aspects of this subject were only mentioned briefly, or left out altogether.

The second part, an exercise in designing a small layout, will have a few track plan illustrations and should be along within a few days.

I hope people find something useful in this post.

As usual I enjoyed your writing, Ernest. Your comment about station platform length being sufficient for the length of trains being run really hits home. Because I was building a layout to take to train shows, I had to limit the overall size, as well as the length of the Hauptbahnhof Bahnsteig. That was fine until some backorders came in and I now have some full length trains and an extension on which to stage them.

Naturally, going to shows I'll keep the train lengths appropriate to the platforms.
Cheers!
