As you may know, I enjoy talking my layout to train shows. Recently I was invited to show at a seasonal chocolate festival. I accepted, with visions of endless chocolate samples dancing in my head.

What I didn't envision was hordes of barbarian children covered in chocolate and other sticky substances descending on my Rheinland Bayern Bahn, with minimal or non-existent supervision. Okay, I exaggerate. Attendance was far in excess of the usual train show crowd and most were well behaved. But I did need to wash the interactive buttons and handrails when we got home. A number of children had to be restrained from reaching behind the plexiglass cover to operate the turnout toggles.

I thanked the organizer for inviting me, but indicated that there would be no repeat performance.

On the bright side, my layout had far more people surrounding it than the "Visit Las Vegas" booth next to us. I think we generated interest in model railroading and in visiting Germany in a non-railroading demographic. And my wife, Kathy, enjoyed running trains.

Thankfully it was only a one day event and close to home.
Cheers!

At times it was a nightmare - and then some kid would spend his limited tickets to bring us samples of the chocolates!  And there were both adults and kids (who had achieved reasonable age) who spent hours at the layout, asking questions about how to get started and examining everything in detail.  I was able to tell them about the next train show in January and further promote the hobby.

So, although I will stick to train shows in the future, both Kathy and I had a good time.
Cheers!
